Top Tips About Wedding Dress Alterations All Brides Should Know

By Richa

Fit is everything. Which is why, when it comes to your wedding dress, alterations are also everything. As you break out the measuring tape, here are few key things to consider when it comes to bridal alterations.

You have said yes to your wedding dress … now what? Unless you are one of those lucky ladies who never, ever has trouble finding items that fit you perfectly straight off the rack, count on having to go the alterations route. If you are having something custom-made, you will probably need to have at least two fittings. How much the tailoring will cost can vary wildly, depending on how involved the tweaks are.

Wedding ensembles come in all shapes, fabrics, textures, and styles, and no wedding dress looks the same on two different brides. What’s bad is when a gorgeous woman and a gorgeous attire don’t look put together because something doesn’t fit quite right. This has nothing to do with whether you’re petite or plus size, believe me, I’ve seen more improperly-fit dresses gapping on the sides on tiny brides than on bigger girls. With the help of a seamstress or tailor, you’ll be ready for your wedding day with a garb that fits flawlessly.

Why Do It, You Ask?

“The need for a bride to have her dress fitted mostly is because they want to look absolutely regal for the shutterbugs. Other than that, Indian weddings are much orchestrated, we have many rituals for which the bride has to be seated, stand and dance, and therefore, she needs to feel free and flowy in her movements rather than be restricted. She needs a fit in which she can enjoy her wedding rather than be cautious about her dressing,” opines designer Pallavi Mohan, brand Not So Serious.

“There is no such hassle when it comes to alterations, as designers, we work really hard and would make anything achievable within our reach to make the bride really content about her dress,” she further added.

Is Any Time The Right Time To Go For Alterations?

It's significant to time your alterations right. Bring your dress in too early and you might not end up with a proper fit. (You may lose or gain weight, which could affect the dress's overall look and fit.) Bring your dress in too late, and you run the risk of not allowing enough time to have all the changes made. We recommend allowing two to three months from your first fitting to your last as an ideal timeline to make all the alterations.

Also, keep in mind that the amount of times you need to go for fittings depends on how much tweaking you're getting done to the attire - on average, most brides go for three or four fittings.

Wait, What Did You Just Say? I Am Confused…

Ms. Pallavi says, “The bride-to-be is often nervous and it is quite obvious because her trousseau is the highlight of her D-day sometimes their relatives and friends who accompany them for the fittings add to the confusion by commenting on the way she looks in the attire.”

The most common misconception brides have about their wedding dress fittings is their unrealistic expectations when it comes to weight loss. Many brides go on crazy diets to attain their ideal weight; too much weight loss can make the bride look strained. Looking healthy and being fit is a long-term process and takes dedication and hard work and cannot be done in a jiffy. One must know that they are beautiful just how they are and should not try too hard to look a certain way rather embrace their unique selves after all beauty comes in all shapes and sizes,” she added.

To Bring Or Not To Bring?

When your tailor adjusts the hem, make sure to bring the shoes you'll wear at the wedding so you'll be the same height you will on the big day. Moreover, bring whatever undergarments you plan to wear along with you to your fitting. We all know the difference shapewear or the right strapless bra can make. And while jewellery, gloves, and other accessories might not change the fit of your wedding dress, they contribute to the overall look. For example, where your wedding necklace falls might influence where you want the neckline of your dress to sit.

Walk Me Through The Process A Little…

If you purchased your dress at a bridal salon, you could most likely get any alterations done there. But if your salon doesn’t offer alterations, be sure to go to a tailor who specialises in bridal dresses, as they know the intricacies of formal eveningwear —in other words, this isn’t a job for your local tailors who sits under peepal ka pedh with a sewing machine.

The first wedding dress fitting usually is the time for you to tell your tailor all the fixes and adjustments you’d like to have done to your dress. You should make sure that your ensemble is the one you wanted – the correct size, the correct colour, the correct style and the correct design. This is also your chance to meet the seamstress or tailor that will be working with you for every fitting until the big day, so you want to be sure that he/she knows what they are doing! Your tailor will start pinning the dress and tucking the fabric to mold the shape to your body, and take note of areas where fabric should be taken in or let out. If anything is unsatisfactory, ask them to alter it for you.

After this initial fitting, every fitting thereafter should be simpler. During each additional fitting, double check to see if all the requests from the previous fitting have been fulfilled. The absolute most crucial thing to take care of during these fittings is your comfort level. If you aren’t able to move around in your dress comfortably, then it needs to be altered so that you can.

Words of Wisdom from Our Expert

“Do not be confused by the number of designs that you will be seeing while choosing your trousseau. Listen to your instinct and go with what your heart says is best for you. Keep comfort a priority, be sure to carry your smile that is your best accessory and most importantly have the most fun and try not to stress, cherish your day,” concludes Ms. Pallavi.
