The Urban Dazzlers

By Sanhati Banerjee

Move over coffee for that ‘something’. That and much more is being oozed out by the contemporary charmers – endearingly termed as fashion or glamour jewellery. Not bowing down under the weight of traditional pieces or carrying that ‘ghar ki lakshmi’ kind of no-nonsense decorativeness; these urban dazzlers are fanciful works of creativity and imagination.

Move over coffee for that ‘something’. That and much more is being oozed out by the contemporary charmers – endearingly termed as fashion or glamour jewellery. Want to add a whimsical note of playfulness in your summer wardrobe? Are you looking forward to little flirtatious, little edgy and largely imaginative renditions? Offbeat and dramatic interpretations can infuse vibrant elements in your summer look.

Conversation Starters

A crop of ‘saas-bahu’ serials would probably never take a break from showing the tiresome retinue of women parading palatial havens decked up in heavy and chunky sets of gold, kundan, polki etc. Obviously, if you are going to be a bride, you will opt for full blown bridal sets or ornamental pieces for a traditional ceremony. But, wearing them to a party, on a date, for casual dayouts, romantic evenings, cocktails or dinners would not be on your mind if you are keen on keeping it light and stylish.

The universe of fashion jewellery serves as a refreshing break for urban women – a break from the usual repertoire of traditional or classic moulds. These are not steeped in queen-like aura of a regal past or high-brow vintage appeal. Rather, they can give you a tough today’s look wrapped in a chic encasing. Solid bohemian forms, flattering colours and flamboyant designs in a range of geometric, floral or gypsy-inspired patterns are offering a wide range to up your summer resort style.

The Silver Swing

Silver is hot property in hi fashion jewellery. The white metal spells a clean and understated look. Cool and crisp – the essence of silver lies in its light weight and lustrous appeal. You can pair silver adornments with a dress, jeans and top/shirt, skirt and top as well as kurtis and sarees – the options are endless.

“Silver is admired by all and is rapidly taking over the dominion in hi fashion jewellery. Boasting of class and trend, silver has become a rage in hi fashion jewellery today. Tanya Rossi’s silver jewellery collections can go well with any attire; traditional or Western.”, says Biren Vaidya, Managing Director, Rose Group of Companies – the official brand custodian for Tanya Rossi jewellery in India.

Rajiv Arora, owner, Amrapali says, “Demand for silver jewellery is constantly soaring. It is affordable and has a diverse design-scape. You will not only have an earring but also a necklace and a waist band and a nose ring and a wrist band and much more.

Silver jewellery provides the “white look” which has been gaining ground for a number of years; it goes well with almost everything. In addition, it helps in creating a “Bohemian” style which is very much ‘in’ these days. Combinations of silver and gems are very popular and look extremely attractive in summers, as gems and silver can be easily matched with any style. A silver necklace or bracelet studded with gems can look exceptionally chic and trendy.”

The Gypsy Woman

Gypsies are nomads, free-settlers and individualistic. Their musical traditions and cultural nuances are caught in a state of cultural fluidity. They live on the margins; they are away from the centre or the mainstream and its norms. They live in close proximity with nature and live by the laws of love and free will. This spirit of freewheeling romance with life has inspired many collections in fashion, many lines of thoughts in art, many genres in music and has caught the imagination of many-a-mortal. In jewellery also, gypsy or Bohemian freewheeling has been captured by free flowing lines, fluid expressions, the use of street-ware and uninhibited looks.
For jewellery designer Suhani Pittie the world of gypsy aesthetics is all about being free spirited. She says, “Jewellery conveys a dialogue and the gypsy style gives you the freedom to put forward your eclectic style in your own way. It’s without any rules, which is why it’s so much fun!”

The Geometry of Boldness

Fashion jewellery itself is an exercise in boldness – in as much as it is a departure from traditional mediums, conventional weightiness and heirloom associations. Hence, steel, cord, metal, wire, tassel etc can form the experimental choices of mediums as well as an expression of freedom. Freedom in lines and silhouettes, eye-popping shapes expressed in a multitude of geometric symphonies exemplifies uncluttered and sharp-fluid combinations of a visual symphony.

For Biren Vaidya, ‘bold’ can be defined as anything that makes a great fashion statement, draws eye balls and is a true conversation starter. He further says, “Geometric designs in high fashion jewellery augment the style quotient and add the edge to any attire! Geometric, asymmetric and angular designs are a few expressions of bold shapes and forms in this spectrum. One could sport colourful and playful pieces for the day and adorn classy and bold pieces for an evening wear.”

For designer Gursimran Chadha of Jagat Jewels, ‘bold’ would exemplify an ornament of impeccable craftsmanship with an array of gemstones standing out to tell a story for itself. He says, “For me, all inspirations are a manifestation of geometrical motifs that could be from architecture or geometrical shapes which I infuse to create a distinct statement effect.”

For designer Suhani Pittie, ‘bold’ is definitely not about size. She says, “It’s whether the jewellery can generate a second look, an emotion…whether it can be a conversation starter or not. If it is able to instill any emotion in the audience, it’s bold!”

Nature’s Child

Nature abounds in inspiration. One of spring-summer’s most endearing thematic inspirations has been floral prints, floral motifs, natural prints and textures, floral shapes in jewellery, birds-flowers-garden themes in garments etc. It’s soothing for the senses – it brings about a sense of refreshing coolness in the form of flowers, birds etc in the midst of sweltering heat. They signify a moment of reunion with the simple joys of nature in a world dominated by cosmetic trends and remain a delightfully charming spring-summer fashion choice.

Talking about natural inspirations on her deigns, Suhani Pittie says, “The fact that they have a very strong Indian DNA attracts me. So even if it’s a flower or a leaf…they are typically Indian and have Indian roots. The peacock, the dance of the swan… it’s all Indian.”

Gursimran Chdha says, “Nature with its spontaneity and momentum keeps inducing the mind with designs although being individuals we all draw inspirations and interpret them differently. The architecture for its geometrical inspirations and the floriculture for colourful concoctions come to us differently.”

The Finishing Line

Contrary to popular misnomers, fashion jewellery is a distinct line of design that comes with utmost specialisation. There are reputed international brands as well as Indian collaborations that will offer you fashion jewellery of worth, fine quality and precision. Being pocket-friendly, these won’t burn a deep hole into your wallets but at the same time, will give you a fine look with their professional finish. These can also be great gifting options.

So, this summer you do not need to worry about accessories if you have sophisticated and statement fashion jewellery pieces with bold and fancy cut gemstones or pearls. Nature-inspired, geometric or asymmetric shapes, floral-themed, or reminiscent of a distinct cultural era – whatever your choice, these will give you a resort-savvy look. Dress it up or tone it down as the occasion might demand but do not forget to coordinate the look on the whole. And, be ready to create a flutter wherever you go!
