The Hot Look That Keeps You Cool

By Anuradha Turner

Behold! Summer weddings are coming! Hence, keeping in mind, the hot climate and the range of confusing styles and fabrics that will not help you feel or look cool, Plan Your Wedding helps our hot grooms figure out a few styles that might actually be just perfect for the season as well your one special day.

It is the season for Summer Wedding and while Brides normally would go through any pain and sweat to look gorgeous, it is comfort that matters the most for the grooms. Although Indian Grooms traditionally wear sherwani, kurta pyjama or a three piece suit. There are various latest trends and styles for the grooms now, which are unique, modern and stylish.

“In comparison to the bride, a groom has lesser options for adorning himself. One of the main adornments for the groom comprises of the accessories. Brooch, pocket squares, and scarves always enhance the look of the groom. Men have started paying more attention to their attire especially for the weddings. Grooms aren’t typically dressed in brocade and heavy embroidered sherwanis anymore. Their shift towards subtle and silhouettes can be seen. And these days we have great outfit options for the grooms for their summer weddings,” says Sharad Raghav, a Mumbai based designer.

So, whether it is looking trendy or regal, all can be achieved in summer too. All you need is just the right trending style and fabrics to give you an edge. Here we explore the possibilities for the groom’s attire during this hot summer season, so that they feel comfortable and cool while looking super hot!

The Dhoti Twist

A traditional kurta and salwar is a great option during summers but here is something which can be ultra-cool and comfortable in summers. A nice pair of cotton dhoti or even the trendy dhoti pants available in soft silk cotton fabrics. Dhoti pants are back in our lives with a twist. Easy to wear and available in many colors which you can team them with a sherwani or a chicken Lucknowi kurta.

Sharad says, “Indian men have been in love with dhoti pants, since ages. It was a tedious task to wear a dhoti before but now you can find dhotis in various cuts and colours and most importantly flowing fabrics that make the movement even more comfortable. You can mix and match the kurta of your choice with a dhoti pant to complete this look. If you are someone who cannot bear the heat, you can always opt for a simple outfit in dhoti pants and choose a stole with heavy work. This way you can opt to remove and wear the stole as per your comfort. Go for heavy embroidered or light-work, depending on your comfort and style,”says Mukul Srivastav, Designer at Raymonds.

The Arrival of Achkan

Nothing probably has taken the fashion industry by storm lately as much as the arrival of Achkan. It’s royal and chic without the overdose of shine or glitter and most importantly, it is perfect for summer! “If you are looking to wear something classy and modern at the same time, then achkan will be a great choice for the grooms. Since Achkans are made of more lighter and finer fabric, it makes a better choice for a summer wedding. A lot of Bollywood stars are in love with this style and have made appearances donning the attire,” says Sharab, Mumbai based Designer.

Those who need a change from sherwanis can give achkans a try. You can style your achkan with a cool turban and Punjabi embroidered juttis to enhance an achkan’s appeal. An achkan in the right colour and with the right accessories will definitely make you stand out in the crowd.

A Nehru jacket is another option for the summer wedding.

The Half Jacket

If you are one of those grooms who can’t do without his usual collared suits, here is a summer option that will keep you cool while giving you that edge factor of wearing a jacket. A bandhgala Nehru jacket with churidar pyjama is a whiff of fresh air for the grooms. Pair it with the jodhpuris, perfect for the groom for a casual mehendi ceremony or a night time cocktail party. The half jacket will keep you in the formal attire without making you sweat. From Nehru style to anghrakha style, the range of options in jackets with a twist of colour or some interesting embroidery will also enhance your look and personality.

The Evergreen Jodhpuri

Jodhpuri suits are a great option for those who want to look traditional yet stylish and guys look smart in jodhpuri suits. It’s one of our favorite attire in men. Now a days you can get hand embroidery, machine embroidery, etc., done in jodhpuri suits. The right fabric is all you require if you wish to stick to this traditional look.

Spring-Summer grooms should opt for jodhpuri in Indian raw silk, tussar and georgette to make a stylish statement on your big day. “Jodhpuris make you look powerful and stylish, hence a favourite with Indian grooms. Instead of choosing contemporary colours, instead of the reds and maroons, experiment with some fresh colors like golden or fuschia or blue”, says Sharad, Mumbai based designer.

Keep your style staples subtle, focus on accessories.

Do not carry heavy shawls, avoid over layering in summers.

Go for comfortable footwear in summer like Kolhapuri slippers or jootis

Avoid wearing formal shoes which look heavy or thick with your relaxed, comfortable attire.

Personalize your look by opting for cotton underarm pads. This will keep the sweaty underarms in control.

Opt for looks that give breathing space to your neck region. This will help you keep cool.

Choose light and fresh colour for day ceremony. For ceremonies like the mehendi or sangeet, you can choose colours like tangy orange, bottle green, and sunny yellow for the kurta and churidar.
