For Stout & Stylish Grooms

By Richa

Our offbeat grooms come in all shapes and sizes and we wouldn’t want it any other way. Plan your wedding will help you find the perfect wedding outfit that would make you look much slimmer without drawing attention to your problem areas.

Shopping for wedding attire is a challenging task especially for the groom. Most of the men are not that updated like women when it comes to fashion. Things become more challenging if the groom is on the heavier side. It is important that he should wear such attire that makes him look dazzling without drawing attention to bulges.

So dapper men, if your wedding is just around the corner and your fitness regime has not yet shown the desired results, then fret not! Just keep in mind the following shopping tips for plus-size grooms to look slimmer on your wedding day.

Choosing fine fabrics - Materials play a crucial role in deciding the entire look. “Go for a thick and stiff material as the base for your traditional wear. Going in for thick velvet and raw silk would be a great idea,” says designers Payal and Rishab Sethi from brand Mem-A-Saab. These rich fabrics will give you a royal look, plus they’ll also help you camouflage those bulges because of their straight fit.

Choose the work intelligently – “If you are on a heavier side, make sure you do not buy something with a lot of work. Embellishments and embroidery will lay more emphasis on your problem area and draw attention to those parts,” suggested designers Payal and Rishab. So strictly avoid any kind of work on bugling belly as well as other problematic areas.

Make dark colours your best friend – According to designers Payal and Rishab “It is always good to choose dark colours since they make you look leaner. You can choose a sherwani or any other outfit of your choice from this season’s hot favorites, classic blue, tree green, or Marsala.” If you love playing with colours then you can also blend maroon and gold, blue and silver, black and grey, maroon and rust for that perfect classic look.

Also, “avoid wearing contrast clothes, wear solid plane. It’s always good to wear clothes in darker similar fabric. Avoid cutting the tones on upper body and lower body, as that would make you look fatter,” further added designers Payal and Rishab.

What’s the bottom line? Grooms with short height and heavy legs needs to avoid wearing pants under the heavy sherwani, it will make him look shorter. Going for a dhoti that reaches up to the ankle would be the right solution. It will make him look slim and tall.

Accessories to accentuate - If you have a short neck and a broad chest, try not going in for a heavy neck wear. Pearl malas look great on grooms, but generally on men with shaped-up chests and long necks. So, if you think you look all the more broad sporting them, then it would be a better idea to avoid them. Simplicity always wins.

When it comes to the footwear, mojaris that match the colour and design of your sherwani will look great on you. If your top wear is in a dark colour, make sure the mojari is also of the same colour. The more they merge with your attire, the leaner look they would give to your body.

Most men tend to over- accessorise their sherwani, and this is where the problem starts. Subtle accessories with only a gracefully small headgear will make you look elegant. The heavier you go on the bling and the larger the headgear; it is bound to make you look stout and broad. Thus, stick to elegance and let the bride go over the top with the glitters and bling. Go for contrasting colours when choosing your safa or stole. This would add length to your look and draw attention away from your bulges.

What to Wear…

Sherwani - The classical Indian attire has the ability to stick close to the body and flatten your bulging belly if tailored perfectly. Having said that, it is essential for you to style it properly. If plump thighs are not your problem, pair your sherwani with a pair of churidar. If they are, a salwar would be the best option. Make sure the sherwani is fitted at the shoulders and there is minimum flare. A sherwani which has its flare done wrong will only add weight to your body. With embellishments, stick to places you wish to highlight.

Suits: A tuxedo may enhance your belly but a well-structured suit would do just the opposite. A suit that hugs you at the right places will be perfect for the big day. When wearing a suit, invest in a single breasted piece. When it comes to styling, make sure the vents are placed on your hips. If not, they will make the jacket stiffer and add an illusion of a bulkier body. Pair it with a shirt that has vertical stripes. A solid coloured neck tie would be amazing too. Wear them with brogues that have a little heel. Together, they will contribute to a totally slimming visuals.

Bandhgalas: Bandhgala suits present another stylish option for your wedding. Like the sherwani, the bandhgalas also flattens out your tummy and creates a slimmer silhouette. With the bandhgala, the trick is in choosing the length. A shorter jacket will only add to your width whereas a slightly longer one will lengthen you. Choose a jacket that falls below your waistband. Pair it with fitted trousers to get a suave look.

Kurtas: If you are a fan of Indian and want to be an understated groom, a gorgeous dressy kurta would be great. To make it suitable for the wedding, invest in a kurta in silk. Silk has a natural fall and would enable a flattering silhouette. If you are going for embellishments and detailing, make sure they are vertical. It makes the eye travel seamlessly on the body and creates a slimmer silhouette. To enhance the look further, add some length to the kurta. Play it up by adding a Nehru Jacket but remember to keep it unbuttoned.

Words of wisdom…

Buying wedding attire for men is as difficult as it is for women, especially when the groom is on the heavier side of the scales. Just like the bride, a groom also needs to make sure that his attire makes him look his stunning best and match the style quotient of his beautiful wife. But what’s the most important thing – “Perceived flaws in your appearance can lead to great distress, a preoccupation with your looks, excessive grooming, undergoing unnecessary procedures to improve your looks etc. Just behave normal, and don’t focus or think about your flaws. You will look more confident and The Man of the Day,” says designers Payal and Rishab.
