Creative Wedding On Cards!

By Asra Shaheen

From artistic souvenirs and personalised stories to salivating gifts and quirky curios, your imagination is the only limit when it comes to designing your wedding invite.

Preeti’s desktop at home is surrounded by many fanciful objet d’art. Every time she sits down to switch on her computer system, she runs her fingers on each of these—there’s a glossy boarding pass with her colleague and her would-be’s name on it. Next to it is a pagdi box with assorted chocolates and a pinwheel with names of her cousin and his would-be bride. The biggest and the most exquisite of all is a maroon-coloured velvet khazana box crafted with laser cut, zircon and a royal emblem of her sister and brother-in-law’s names along with a caricature of the baaraat in gold. Well, what is all actually comprises is a save-the-date card that’s designed to resemble a boarding pass, a pagdi box announcing an approaching wedding reception with some ‘sweet’ offerings, and a khazana box that neatly holds sangeet, mehendi, wedding and reception invites, and memories of a wedding in the family that was solemnised last month. Well, who says there’s dearth of creativity in times of twitter and watsapp? From artistic souvenirs and quirky curios to reusable frills and edible goodies– wedding invites get a complete makeover in the ever-burgeoning big fat Indian wedding scene. We bring you the lowdown on some inspiring and innovative ways to ‘cordially invite’ your guests.

Of Bags & Boxes
Spelling class and luxury in every sense of the word are the box/ bag invites that are used to hold the invitation card in place of envelopes. Box/bag is in fact one of the most exquisite styles of invitation in the Indian weddings today. Made of paper or cloth, the box or bag contains the card along with personalized articles such as assorted goodies, souvenirs, photo albums, silver coins and much more. The idea is to design a memorabilia that stays with the guests and doesn’t end up in raddi along with old newspapers!
When our Dream Girl, Hema Malini’s eldest daughter Esha Deol tied knot with businessman Bharat Takhtani, their wedding card was placed in a resplendent golden-n-cream re-usable box. Well, need we say, if it’s in Bollywood, it is obviously the ‘in’ thing?

Bespoke Scrolls
From being a medium of messages in the bygone era to becoming creative reinvention in the modern age, scrolls have come a long way. In fact, our love affair with scrolls never seems to fade. Crafted with handmade paper, vellum paper, velvet, silk or satin, scroll invites are available in stunning hues and awe-inspiring designs. From velvet pouches having zari lace to handcrafted filigree plastic containers, the scroll invites are contained in a variety of attractive options.
You can always add a bespoke touch with border, text and design of your choice.

Get ‘em in Shape!
Wedding cards today are shaping up, quite literally! From the unusual hexagon and triangle cuts to shapes of doli, tabla, kalash, leaves, flowers and heart, everything and anything seems to have become a source of inspiration for the new wedding card on the block. Available in a variety of materials such as fabric, paper and metal, the contemporary cards are ruled by one and only style mantra—Think different, look different.
“Clients come to us with their own ideas… some people like traditional designs, some prefer vintage styles, and some go for flower patterns. We use fabrics such as silk, gotta, shimmer and brocade to make it exclusive,” says Himanshu Sharma, owner of Wedding Cards 4u that customizes a range of wedding invites such as scrolls, silk boxes and cards with brooches.

Sweet Somethings
Kuch meetha ho jaaye! Well, when talking of celebrations, can the ‘sweeter’ side of life be far behind? If there’s anything that brings instant smile on the face of your prospective guests who receive the invite, it’s the salivating gifts. Now, it’s not as if you need to blow up all the money to make your guests feel special. If you are being scrupulous on your spendings, identify a list of select guests and customize these invitations with scrumptious confections such as roasted nuts, chocolate-coated almonds, fig bars or traditional mithai.
Need some Bollywood inspiration? Well, when our chocolate boy Shahid Kapoor married his lady love Mira Rajput recently (hope those broken hearts have mended by now!), their wedding invitation uniquely comprised exotic tea and honey!

Personalised Storytelling
Ask any wedding photographer and s/he will tell what a sensation personalised themed cards have become. From Bollywood themes to individual stories of love-at-first-sight, couples don’t shy away these days from screaming their hearts out to the world through caricatures and personal photographs in their wedding cards!
No wonder we have been seeing Rajs and Simrans of all shapes and sizes in the numerous versions of DDLJ-themed save-the-dates!
“For one of the mehendi cards, we used the actual snapshot of the couple’s hand-in-hand. It gave a personalised touch to the card. For another invite, we printed the groom’s family photograph on the cover. When the card is opened, the same family image has the bride in it,” describes Jatish Mongia of EFFECTS by Jatish that personalizes invitations with a blend of the latest technology and use of the finest ensemble of papers. The motto of his company interestingly reads ‘invite in style’. “Now we have introduced the latest trend– Digital Personal Invite! It’s a video shot of the family members. We make a nice sequence with background music and the invitation is recorded in original voices. When the card is opened, it plays the video wherein the family invites guests. It’s a very unique concept indeed,” he adds.

Quirky Curios
Thinking out-of-the-box! Well, that’s exactly what our new-age couples are up to these days when it comes to designing their invites. Quirky, funny or bold—they don’t mind crossing the line.
If there’s the video invite for the filmi couple, there’s newspaper/ comic for those who always wanted to see themselves in print! Popcorn boxes, match stick boxes, passports, credit cards, film rolls… your imagination is the only limit.
