Coding Climate Change Via Fashion

By Richa

Fashion can help tackle climate change – and Gaurav Gupta’s latest collection titled ‘melt’ proves it. The ace designer brings the issue of global warming to the ramp, which is both imperative and meaningful.

The maverick designer Gaurav Gupta chose to display his collection at the Amazon India Fashion Week (AIFW) 2016 outside the show area to create awareness about the ill-effects of global warming. His collection is inspired by the melancholic apocalypse. This is a time to raise an eyebrow at the apparel industry which today, contributes to 10 percent of global carbon emissions and remains the second largest industrial polluter, second only to oil.

With this show, he asked about the cost of fashion, and what the consequences could be of a city that only knows extremes: freezing or melting. This collection is a 90-95 percent zero waste collection; with every piece he has made, he has tried to reduce excess, and be kind to the environment that sustains us. The colour of the whole collection was inspired by fire from flame orange to blue and then it to absolute black and then colour of grey and white. It’s a very contemporary take on that. Fabrics used in them were neoprene, sparkling jerseys and silks to give them a flowy structure. He has tried to invoke the feeling of melting which is near, and no longer an abstract fear.

This grey sari gown with bugle bead embroidered boning on the shoulder narrates the story of catalytic clothing. Looking good, feeling good and doing good are no longer mutually exclusive. And it’s all the fashion.

Be a part of the solution with this gold chiffon sari gown with an embroidered net cape that speaks volumes. Put in plain words, an elegantly crafted design that beautifully illustrated designer’s strong points in fabric handling, which is sure to be a smart seller.

Black neoprene gown with antique gold embroidery on the shoulders that looked like melted metal brought the life in the garment and at the same time describes why fashion should be on the climate change agenda.
