Dhoti is a clumsy garment. You look older than your age when you wear a dhoti. Dhoti is too rustic for a glam setting. How many times have you heard these lies and fallen for them? The truth, we learnt, is exactly the opposite. Breezy and super comfy, a dhoti has all the flair to make a cool fashion statement. In fact, a dhoti is to a man what a saree is to a woman. But sadly, the traditional garment has been deprived of the limelight that the saree enjoys, thanks to the obsession with everything western when it comes to menswear. While saree have undergone an evolution and are celebrated everywhere from the red carpet to those glam gatherings in their myriad imaginative versions, dhoti is yet to have its Cinderella moment. But recently, we were pleasantly surprised when we spotted a few fashion renegades wearing the most fun and fearless versions of dhoti. Traditional dhotis for the groom are seeing a comeback this wedding season.

Indian men especially need to make a note of the fact that the newest trend making a mark on the fashion scene is something from the ancient or rather cultural closet – Dhoti and Lungi. Yes, these prominent cultural fashion ambassadors of India have been seen on the ramp in recent times. Of course, you can wear them, but with just a little bit of advice and a whole lot of confidence. Men are actually the true peacocks! Newer styles and an evolved appropriation of tradition have resulted in some fantastic looking Indian grooms recently.

“Yes I Agree. It has been too long that men have been wearing different styles of Denims and I feel it is time for denims to go out and let Dhoti and Shalwars take the front seat for mens. It is important to understand that dhoti is originally unstitched garment and therefore there has to be a certain type of drape to the garment. We cannot use stiff fabrics to drape the dhoti. Fabrics like Viscose or Cotton works the best for a Dhoti,” opines Designer Mr. Fahd Khatri.

Our ancestors wore it, our fathers wore it – and now it’s down to you. Generations before you wore it in the same old boring way however, now you have a choice. Dhoti pants are trending this season. Dhotis for men can be worn with traditional kurtas for dhoti kurta style outfit or with sherwanis, but you can also style these comfy Dhoti pants differently.

In our first ever rule-bending feature on dhoti, we give a fun and funky refresh to the humble garment. Here is How…

Pair your dhoti up with a white Tee!

Wear your dhoti with a white T-shirt for a movie or just for your casual outing. Pair it up with comfy sneakers or slippers and you are good to go. Dhotis for men can be stitched at a fashion boutique for a wonderful fit and to avoid any puffiness in the front.,,, Pinterest

Be a boho with dhotis for men!

Dhotis are becoming a part of designer clothes and how! One can rock this look of Mr. Hottie, Ranbir Kapoor from ‘Rockstar‘. How? Pair dhoti pants with a linen kurta, a denim jacket and wear scarf turban on your head.

Dress up the Indian way!

This is the oldest style of draping a dhoti. The jacket completes the Indo-western look of this outfit style. Fashion boutiques and local clothing boutiques offer designer men’s dresses comprising a dhoti and jacket outfit and dhoti kurta. So to get this style is a cake walk. Don’t want to spend? If you have any old Indian suit blazer, then you can club it up similarly.

Tunics for Men

Pair your dhoti pants with this hybrid shirt-kurta (tunic) and look stylish as ever. Add mojris to finish this look.

Team up a Bandhgala blazer with dhoti pants for men!

A bright dhoti pant clubbed with a raw silk bandhgala blazer is perfect for a sangeet party! And you will be comfortable during those dances as well. Dhoti pants can easily be stitched at clothing boutiques.

Embrace printed perfections and club your dhoti pants with shades of fun!

These are one of the funkiest Dhoti pants for men. Club them up with anything- a plain blazer, a shirt, a casual t-shirt. These can easily be your go-to pants. Many fashion boutiques offer printed dhoti pants for men.

Other trendy ways:

  • Dhoti looks the best when work with a basic cotton kurta (preferable hand woven cotton) and a Nehru Jacket or a Waist Coat.
  • A suit looks good, but a dhoti with the suit is even better. A crisp solid shirt with a jacket and a dhoti looks amazing.
  • Wear a tee or a cardigan with the dhoti to look innovative and stylish.
  • A Jodhpuri Jacket looks the best with paired with dhoti.

Inputs by Designer Mr. Fahd Khatri

Indian grooms these days are experimenting with conventional silhouettes. Ethnic dhotis are the royal representation of our Indian heritage and customs. Fashion designers are looking at reviving this mens attire and giving it a chic makeover for men to try it out.

“The colour story dabbles for this menswear outfit is antique, metallic, and neutral tones in symphony with Indian brights. However, you can also try white, beige, grey, blue, and black. Mojri is the ideal footwear to wear with the dhoti, but with so many different styles and drapes of dhotis the upper garments also plays a vital role for selection of footwear. You can wear a mojri if you team up dhoti with a basic kurta and waist coat or Nehru jacket. If you team it up with a t-shirt and a cardigan you can wear loafers,” concluded Designer Mr. Fahd Khatri.

A dhoti works for weddings and festivals as well as casual outings. Experiment with its drapes to make it more exciting. Embraced and adapted by designers, the dhoti’s new avatars are comfy, funky and definitely stylish. With some practical yet fashionable advice, it is time for all Indian men to feel proud and wear dhotis and lungis in style.
