His creations are a fusion of style and craftsmanship. And his designer label “Gaurang” embodies elegance and beauty. Gaurang Shah, the fashion designer from Hyderabad who recently won the best designer award for utilization of Indian weaves and craftsmanship at the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai, opened his new couture store in the upmarket Jubilee Hills. The store will showcase “ready-to-wear and practical” fashion clothing lines across women’s wear, accessories with about 100 new contemporary, traditional, bridal and Indo-western wear. These include Kanjeevarams, khadi, Kota, organza, Uppada sarees and in outfits Anarkalis, Ghagras, Short Kurtas, straight cut suits and western dress and gowns.
Gaurang strives to lend a contemporary flair to traditional Indian weaves with hand embroideries like Parsi, Kashmiri, chikankari, Kutch, kasauti on handloom sarees. He infuses the traditional handlooms and weaves with Jamdani technique (pure zari on cottons and silks). The designer presented his Kanjeevarams with kalamkari ‘Ardhangini’ creations on India Textile Day at the Fashion Week. The 23 outfits presented by him include saris, anarkalis and ghagras, appealing to the modern bride. His creations draw inspirations from the Panchantantra stories, the Kanjeevarams, Kalamkari, Zardozi, and the intricate Korvai weaving known for its grace and elegance.
The designer works with over 450 hand weave craftsman to create sarees and dress out of khadi, cotton and silk might deserve an attention. He has participated in over 8 fashion shows including the prestigious Lavera fashion floor in Berlin and LFW summer and Winter Fest this year.
